Bagong Bayani

Philippine Radio was established in 2019 at the invitation of Radio Kidnappers, now Radio Hawkes Bay.

It was a rare chance and opportunity that I was invited to join in to bring about a positive and significant effect for multicultural diversity on air especially that I am bringing Filipino cultural shows.

That was a big milestone on my part as a Volunteer.  This program was then supported by former Philippine Ambassador to NZ Gary Domingo in fact he had given a certificate of appreciation to Radio Kidnappers in 2020.

I started broadcasting to bring lots of topics, issues that range from economic, cultural, social, and political issues of the Philippines.  This also include stories of individual Filipinos in New Zealand, how they settled in and experience both the ups and downs of NZ life, language, and cultural barriers and to practice their profession or whatever endeavor they engaged with.

Now after five years, I thought of changing the name from Philippine Radio into BAGONG BAYANI which means New Hero.

I perceived that this idea could bring something inspirational to Filipinos especially to the younger generations and our Filipino contract workers (trades, marketing hospitality, construction, and meat processing).

Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero even said “the younger generations are the hope of our nation and the future generation” (Ang Kabataan ay Pag-asa ng Bayan).

Rizal was a novelist, a writer, Doctor of Medicine, even a farmer, scientist.  He became the inspiration of most Filipinos.  We learned so much from his example as patriotic and his heroism as a Filipino.

Every Filipinos has a talent, skills that start from childhood, in school and on any social upbringing and integration.  Being in New Zealand has lots of challenges yet success stories behind these challenges and hurdles have molded an array of success stories.

I strongly believe that being on the airwaves is one way to uphold the identity and cultural uniqueness of every Filipino.

So here we are every Bagong Bayani must rise with dignity, inspiration, positive mind set and let us enjoy that freedom of democracy within our own community, other communities, and a larger New Zealand community.
