History of Radio Hawke's Bay
The journey of Radio Hawke's Bay, originally known as Radio Kidnappers, began in 1994 when Michael Fowler and Rex Lythgoe established the station. A pivotal year followed in 1995, as they successfully applied for crucial funding from NZ On Air and secured frequency approval from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage for 1431 AM. This strategic move expanded their reach significantly, providing coverage from Wairoa down to Waipukurau, encompassing all of rural Hawke's Bay. That same year, on March 3rd, the station conducted its first test run, officially going to air just a week later from its initial home on Queen Street in Hastings.
As the station grew, its footprint expanded. In 2002, a new studio was established in Napier's Emerson Street, operating successfully until 2006. That year also saw the Hastings studios relocate from Queen Street to Taikura House, previously the Lowe Walker building on Fitzroy Avenue. A significant enhancement to the listener experience arrived in 2009 with the acquisition of the 104.7 FM frequency, offering clearer, higher-quality broadcasting.
A rebranding initiative took place in 2022, when Radio Kidnappers officially became Radio Hawke's Bay. This change was designed to better reflect and encompass the vibrant region the station serves, coinciding with a strategic move to Hastings Street. This new location provided improved accessibility and greater exposure for the evolving brand. Most recently, in March 2025, Radio Hawke's Bay proudly celebrated its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of serving the community.
