David and Sandra Brown Carr report on the 2024 Hawkes’ Bay Race Unity Awards, which were held several months ago in Clive. Regional heats were also held in 13 other regions of Aotearoa at around the same time.
The theme of the 2024 Speech Awards was: Te Taura Tangata, The Rope of Unity. Just as the intertwining strands of a rope create a unified, cohesive whole that is stronger than each individual strand, unity among people creates a stronger, unified society.
This year, there were 9 entrants in the Hawke’s Bay Race Unity Speech Awards. Students from years 11, 12, and 13, and from 7 different schools, participated.
After listening carefully to all 9 speeches, the judges decided that the winner of this year’s Awards was Audrey Anna Robin, a year 11 student from Napier Girls High School. You can hear her winning speech, after which David will chat with Audrey.
The show also includes the speeches of the runner-up, Sophie Webber, a year 13 student from Woodford House in Havelock North; and Chris Proctor, a year 12 student at Lindisfarne College, Hastings.
All nine speeches are available to listen to on the audio.com website. In the Audio.com search bar, type “Race Unity Speech Awards 2024”.
